It is one of Europe's largest conservation zoos. It is home
to 6,405 animals, of which most are endangered in the wild. Whipsnade
Zoo first opened in 1931 as the first open zoo in Europe to be easily accessible
to the public. It was an immediate success & received over 38,000 visitors
on the first day. Most of the first animals came from a bankrupt animal show,
& walked from Bedford station !
At Easter 2007, the zoo opened a new walk-through lemur
enclosure. This was officially by Dominic Byrne from The Chris Moyles Show
on Radio 1, who is a regular visitor to the park.
About the Lemur
The term "lemur" comes from a Latin word lemures, meaning
"spirits of the night" or "ghosts". This likely refers
to their large, reflective eyes and the wailing cries of some species. Lemurs
are primates found naturally only on the island of Madagascar. Female
lemurs are in charge! This female domination is
very rare in mammals, however it is observed consistently in lemurs. All the
adult males exhibit submissive behavior to adult females in their daily life
particularly in relation to feeding, grooming, & choice of where they
So, unless they tow the line, no food, clean clothes or bed!

An exciting imaginative and one off project, with 190 vertical new pine railway
sleepers forming wonderful flowing walkways to view the lemurs. A great creation
that will be valued for years.
